Neighbors Building Neighborhoods Program: ELACC's Core Organizing Issues
|
In an effort to improve the Eastside's overall community health and well-being, ELACC's the activities Neighbors Building Neighborhoods Program focus on three core issues:
Educational Equity
Education justice is carried out by the Parent Action Committee (PAC), which focuses on achieving educational equity and implementing parent leadership strategies. Its most recent campaign victory was working to secure the A-G Curriculum in high schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District. The A-G curriculum provides the minimum coursework necessary for a student to be eligible for admissions into a California university or state college. Many community stakeholders see the adoption of this curriculum as a critical step towards closing the education gap for the Eastside region.
Economic
Justice
The
Neighbors
Organizing and Working (NOW) committee focuses on removing barriers to economic justice. It fights for and taps into local hiring agreements tied to the major public development projects in the region. These efforts focus on monitoring compliance of existing hiring agreements and ensuring resources exist to connect residents with the job opportunities. In addition, NOW's goal is to address barriers to economic justice, such as language. It has specifically focused on VESL programs (Vocational English as a Second Language), which integrates basic English language instruction into vocational training curriculum targeted for non-native English speakers. ELACC has conducted extensive research on current VESL initiatives, funding sources and best practices as an initial step in expanding such programs in their community.
Housing
The Comite de Inquilinos en Accion (CIA) was formed in 2005 to address injustices in redevelopment and housing. The campaigns concentrate on implementation of fair housing policies, especially as they relate to housing units lost and families displaced as a result of the development projects. The survey results will inform ELACC of their constituent's housing related challenges and priorities.
