Community Wellness

Mission
The department of Community Wellness strives to improve the overall health of the community of Boyle Heights and unincorporated East Los Angeles by implementing a holistic approach in providing tools and resources for resident to reach economic self-sufficiency. Programs focus on leveraging resident assets and addressing barriers to obtaining good jobs and improving community health.

Goals
•  Provide Boyle Heights residents with access to quality job training and placement programs
•  Provide ELACC tenants with a quality Tenant Services Program, one that includes cultural, educational and leadership skills
•  Research current data on the local workforce landscape and growth industries; use the data to further the goal of the Community Wellness Department

Narrative on program activity
The Department of Community Wellness refers participants to job training and placement programs. In 2005 the department referred over 20 participants to training programs. Our Career Advocate met individually with participants to prepare resumes and held employment workshops, including a Workers Rights workshop.

For ELACC tenants, the department organized tenant meetings creating a networking and community building space for tenants and ELACC staff. Currently the tenant services coordinator is working on a literacy program to assist elementary age tenants in reaching or surpassing grade level performance in reading and writing. In August of 2005, Community Wellness held its first Community Health Resource Fair at our newly acquired site Kern Villa apartments. Six community health organizations attended and about thirty residents and clients participated in the fair.
