In 1995, an urban planner, attorney, community organizer and real estate developer joined forces to create a Community Development Corporation dedicated to serving a densely populated, low income, urban neighborhood in East Los Angeles. Their neighborhood. What began as an ambitious dream shared by a group of activists united only by their passion and vision, soon became the East LA Community Corporation (ELACC).
Today, ELACC is a well-established 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Since its inception, ELACC has developed nearly 360 affordable housing units, organized community residents to advocate for change, and counseled low income individuals to build personal assets through homeownership, education, and building viable businesses.
By harnessing over $80 million in housing and other community development resources, we improve the quality of life for approximately 2,000 people every year—people who need not only homes, but a comprehensive, integrated approach to overcoming poverty and transforming their community. A unique model, and one that works.
