The East LA Community Corporation and the Boyle Hotel
A wave of development and gentrification has begun to displace many longtime residents of the nearly 200 year old neighborhood of Boyle Heights, California, including the Mariachi musicians who occupy the Boyle Hotel, known locally as the "Mariachi Hotel." Developers with plans to demolish the Boyle Hotel were in escrow to buy it. That's when the East LA Community Corporation (ELACC) stepped in and convinced the developer to let ELACC buy the Hotel.
East LA Community Corporation
purchased the Boyle Hotel in December 2006, to
rehabilitate and preserve the historic structure as
affordable housing for the Mariachi musicians who live
there, and work in the adjacent Mariachi Plaza. In
addition to restoring the Victorian features of the
façade, ELACC will turn the 32 room hotel into fully
functioning apartments. Built in 1889 , The Hotel's prominence makes it
a true gateway to the Eastside. However, at 118 years
old, this historic building is in critical need of major structural and façade repairs.
Currently, the Hotel is home to low-income tenants, who
work on a daily basis to book performances around the
adjacent Mariachi Plaza. In the last 3 decades, the area
has become a Mariachi hub, and is home to many skilled
musicians available for hire.
