Housing group aims to restore 'mariachi hotel' in Los Angeles
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A nonprofit housing group has purchased the Boyle Hotel, hoping to raise $5 million for restoration and to keep rents affordable for the mariachis who live there.

The mariachis, who work across the street in the landmark Mariachi Plaza, waged a public battle over the fate of the four-story, brick building.

The purchase announced Monday by the East L.A. Community Corp. also marked a victory for community groups that fear downtown gentrification will affect nearby neighborhoods, driving out residents with higher rents.

"We were fearful that developers looking at the building would propose some sort of loft development that wouldn't include people who were traditionally housed there," said Maria Cabildo, executive director of the East LA Community Corp.

The organization, which purchased the hotel along with a neighboring commercial building for just under $2 million, said it hopes to preserve the building's affordable housing units, as well as provide a permanent home for the mariachis who have strolled the Plaza for decades.
