Situated just east of downtown Los Angeles, at the intersection of five freeways, Boyle Heights and neighboring East Los Angeles are nearly 100% Latino, with a vibrant culture to match. But despite living in a neighborhood with some of the city's best food, music, and art, low income residents confront a lack of economic opportunities, quality affordable housing, and traditional banking services. Residents rarely feel empowered to participate in decision-making affecting their own community.
Consider the following sobering statistics (from 2008 American Community Survey 1-year Estimates – East Los Angeles):
• 80.5% of local housing stock was built before 1970
• 63.5% of residents are renters
• 29.8% of residents are living in overcrowded conditions
• 56.9% of residents are devoting over 30% of their income to housing costs
• Median household income is $34,063
• 29% of families live below the poverty line
