SUMMARY:Mariachi Plaza Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:East LA Community Corporation invites you to the first community meeting for the proposed affordable housing development in Mariachi Plaza. At this initial meeting\, we will be reviewing the rent levels for the units\, the populations that will be living in the development\, and how you can get involved and collaborate in the process. \n\nThe current proposal includes:\n\n\n \n\n\n• A 60-unit affordable rental development for low-income families and transitional age youth. \n\n\n• A rental office\, community room and ample office space for tenant service use\, including case management.\n\n\n• Over 6\,340 square feet of retail on street level facing the plaza and a 2\,035 mariachi cultural center for the Organizacion de Mariachis Unidos de Los Angeles (OMULA)\, to provide music classes out of the property and offer summer programming out of the actual plaza. OMULA has been an active organization and many of its membership rely on seeking employment from the plaza. \n\n\n• Across the street from Bailey Street\, a community garden operated by CALO YouthBuild that would serve as green open space for the community\, access to fresh\, traditional produce and nutritionally rich foods in Boyle Heights\, where nutritious food is much less available than in other areas.\n\n\n \n\n\nAdditionally\, we plan to collaborate with Jovenes\, Inc. to provide supportive services for the transitional age youth population on site\, free of charge. Jovenes\, Inc. provides services for youth age 18-24 in the firm of employment services\, referrals and advocacy for public benefits\, and mental health services. \n\nFor more information\, contact:\nFernando Abarca 323-604-1983 \nJacqueline Monterrosas 323-604-1951 \n

SUMMARY:Hollywood Street Vendor Leaders Press Conference
DESCRIPTION:The press conference will take place on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. & Highland\, in front of Forever 21.\nHollywood street vendors will hold a press conference to protest the designation of Hollywood Blvd as a “no vending” area within LA City’s Proposed Sidewalk Vending Program. Street vendors will then collect petitions of support from visitors and tourist on the Walk of Fame. \nOn Tuesday\, April 17th\, 2018\, the Los Angeles City Council voted 11-4 to approve a framework to legalize street vending in Los Angeles. The City Attorney is now drafting the ordinance which is set to return to City Council next month in July. The Los Angeles Street Vendor Campaign (LASVC) believes this is the right step toward creating economic opportunities for hard working sidewalk vendors. However\, we are concerned about the exclusion of Hollywood Boulevard. The “Operating Requirements” (Attachment 3\, Page 6) of the program\, recommended by the office of the Chief Legislative Analyst (CLA) and adopted by City Council\, include a provision that completely prohibits sidewalk vending within 500 feet of Hollywood Boulevard. \nHollywood business groups have claimed that sidewalk vending obstructs pedestrian access to the walk of fame and Councilmember O’Farrell asked for Hollywood Boulevard to be included in a list of no-vending areas. Sidewalk vending has been an integral part of street culture in Los Angeles for many years and tourists visit Los Angeles\, including the walk of fame\, with an expectation to see and shop from sidewalk vendors. Dozens of vendors have been organizing to support sidewalk cleanliness and pedestrian safety and the LASVC believes sidewalk vendors in Hollywood should be part of the conversation in finding solutions to issues of sidewalk obstruction and overcrowding. Hollywood vendors and allies will be speaking on Wednesday to uplift their stories and call on the small businesses and Councilmember O’Farrell to work together to find a solution that doesn’t exclude an entire group of hardworking entrepreneurs. \nJoin Street Vendor Leaders in the fight to an equitable future. The press conference will take place on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. & Highland\, in front of Forever 21. \nSee you there.

SUMMARY:Renter's Day LA
DESCRIPTION:ELACC is part of the Renter’s Rights Movement in LA and we are advocating for policy to protect and expand rent control. Please join us this Wednesday\, April 25 to ask City Council’s Housing Committee to support the Repeal of Costa-Hawkins at the state level. \nWhat is Costa-Hawkins? \nThe Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act (AB 1164; codified in California Civil Code Sections 1954.50) places significant limits on the ability of cities in California to implement rent control. \n\nCosta-Hawkins prohibits cities from implementing rent control for any single family home or condominium\, and any apartment constructed after February 1995.\nCosta-Hawkins prohibits cities that established rent control laws prior to the Act’s passage in 1995 from expanding rent control. L.A. – the largest city in the state – cannot place rent control on apartments built after 1978. San Francisco cannot place rent control on apartments built after 1979.\nCosta-Hawkins prohibits cities from implementing “strict” rent control\, known as “vacancy control.” Landlords can raise the rental price to any amount following a tenant vacancy.\n\nWhat does this mean for renters in LA? \n\nNo rent control expansion.\nNo safety net for long term tenants meaning\, landlords pressure long time tenants to move out and raise rent for new tenants.\n\nWhat ELACC is doing? \nRepealing Costa-Hawkins  gives us the opportunity to create new rent control regulations in LA\, further protecting thousands of families from displacement. \nOver 500\,000 signatures have been collected to add the repeal of Costa-Hawkins in the California ballot in November\, we want the city of LA to support the repeal of Costa-Hawkins and help sustain our communities. \nWhat YOU can do? \nShow up and support on Wednesday\, April 25\, from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at City Hall\, share your story of being a renter in the city of LA and join the movement. Follow #RentersDayLA and updates on Facebook\, Twitter\, and Instagram.
